Ross Conrad discusses Natural Beekeeping

Ros Conrad is the author of Natural Beekeeping: Organic Approaches to Modern Apiculture.

The various chemicals used in beekeeping have, for the past decades, held Varroa Destructor, a mite, and other major pests at bay, but chemical resistance is building and evolution threatens to overtake the best that laboratory chemists have to offer. In fact, there is evidence that chemical treatments are making the problem worse. Natural Beekeeping flips the script on traditional approaches by proposing a program of selective breeding and natural hive management.

Conrad brings together the best organic and natural approaches to keeping honeybees healthy and productive. Readers will learn about nontoxic methods of controlling mites, eliminating American foulbrood disease (without the use of antibiotics), breeding strategies, and many other tips and techniques for maintaining healthy hives. Specific concepts and detailed management techniques are covered in a matter-of-fact, easy-to-implement way.

Natural Beekeeping describes opportunities for the seasoned professional to modify existing operations, increase profits, and eliminate the use of chemical treatments. Beginners will need no other book to guide them. Whether you are an experienced apiculturist looking for ideas to develop an integrated pest management approach or someone who wants to sell honey at a premium price, this is the book you’ve been waiting for.

The Bees: Social Comment 3

Some thing is happening to the Bee populations of the world…they are disappearing without a trace. No one knows why, were or how, what is known is that it is causing catastrophe economic and agriculturally not only for beekeepers, but also farmers and manufacturers who go the natural way (organic or “Green” Way)to produce their produce and products. This issue effects us all, even in areas we still don’t realize, is it disease, radiation from towers, … ?

Beekeeping - Urban Bees first flight of the year

check out http://www.urbanbees.co.uk
There has been an unspoken anticipation of the day that the bees will come out of their winter home to get a breath of fresh air, check out the food supplies and relieve themselves. Today that day came for our bees. Jan 19th 08 saw the temperature peak above 15 degrees C which is warm enough for our bees to break cluster and take the first flight of the new year. As Alison was busy making our late Saturday breakfast her attention was drawn to a robin perched on our wall above the hive and looking in that direction was happily surprise to also see the bees streaming from the tiny hive entrance. With camera in hand she went outside to catch the event on camera. We’re like proud parents when their child takes their first walk. All full of joy that everything is moving on nicely. A beekeeper is always happy to see their bees emerge during the winter since it is an indication that all is well within the hive. It’s only an indication since it is still a bit cold to be opening the hive and getting a good look inside but it does tell us that the colony is alive. It’s a great start to the year and our late breakfast was that extra bit special.
